According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis affects one in every seven Americans. It afflicts people of all ages but occurs more often as a person gets older. Some forms often begin when a person is between ages 20 and 40. Arthritis is usually chronic - meaning that it lasts a long time - and for many people it may not ever go away.
There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related diseases. The most common type is osteoarthritis, which involves the breakdown of cartilage and bones and causes pain and stiffness. Other forms include rheumatoid arthritis, fibromylagia, osteoporosis, lupus, gout, lower back pain, bursitis and tendonitis. (www.arthritis.org)
If you have been diagnosed with arthritis, we offer specialized arthritis management therapy. Our goal is to help ease your functional limitations, reduce and manage your pain, and educate you on self-care and fitness with our arthritis therapy services. Your arthritis therapy begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your functional limitations. Our team of expert physical therapists will then design a treatment plan based on your individual needs and goals. Throughout your arthritis management and treatment, we work hard to help you return to all your normal functional activities.
When you complete your arthritis physical therapy, you will be given a personalized home exercise program to further enhance your rehabilitation outcome. We also recommend our Well Care Program and Arthritis Foundation Aquatic classes, offered at our Gambrills location. These support programs help arthritis patients maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
